Energy procurement

1Circle’s independent service for securing market-leading electricity and gas contracts – standard or renewable

Purpose

Achieve lower energy cost, budget certainty and a clear path to renewable supply

Energy contracts are a large and recurring cost, and the decision to sign one is often made under time pressure. 1Circle secures market-leading electricity and gas prices – standard or renewable – for single sites and portfolios.

As an independent adviser paid a fixed fee by you, not commissions from retailers, we set a supply strategy that fits your budget and emissions goals, run a multi-round procurement that makes retailers compete for your business, and see the new contract through to a correct first bill.

Our clients achieve:

  • Lower energy cost – market-leading electricity and gas tariffs
  • Budget certainty – contract terms that reduce exposure to market volatility, with forecasts based on your business plan
  • Lower advisory cost – a transparent fixed fee, typically below broker commissions over the contract term
  • Faster approvals – a board-ready recommendation built on rigorous financial and risk analysis
  • Emissions reduction – a costed pathway to renewable supply
  • Time saved – one adviser runs the process end to end, from strategy to first bill

Why act now

Energy contracts lock in cost for years, but are often decided in days

Retail offers can expire within three days – too fast for most teams to analyse, compare and approve.  The terms that drive cost over the life of a contract, such as load tolerance bands, pass-through costs and termination conditions, are also easy to miss or insufficiently assess.

Common triggers for action include:

  • Contract expiry – lapsed contracts roll onto default or market rates that are typically well above negotiated prices
  • Budget pressure – a price rise, or a board or ESG commitment to renewable supply
  • Portfolio change – new sites, acquisitions, or many contracts with mismatched end dates
  • Emissions targets – a strategic decision to reduce Scope 1 (gas) and Scope 2 (electricity) emissions

Preparation and timing decide the result. Going to market 6 to 12 months before expiry attracts more offers and stronger competition, and an accurate load forecast secures sharper tariffs while avoiding penalties for using more or less than contracted.

A further reason to act is the favourable pricing of renewables. Renewable supply can now cost about the same as standard power, so a contract signed today can deliver a 2030 renewable target at little or no premium to current budgets.

Solution

An independent adviser on your side, from strategy to first bill

We act only for you. Because we are paid a fixed fee rather than retailer commissions, our recommendations are only shaped by your goals. Our service covers:

  • Electricity – standard and renewable supply for large and small market sites
  • Gas – mains supply
  • Renewable certificates – Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGCs) where required to meet a renewable target
  • Metering – Direct Metering Agreements (DMA)
  • Scale – from single sites to multi-state portfolios, bought individually or through ACCC-authorised group buying

Renewable electricity offers draw on a wider range of options and, as a consequence, carry more considerations that affect price, cost risk, perception and complexity. 1Circle guides you through each choice so that the contract you sign supports where your business is heading.

Process

A thorough, auditable process that delivers confidence and results

Our five-step process consistently delivers excellent outcomes. A key feature is the care we take to inform stakeholders and manage expectations at every step.

Our multi-round procurement, for example, uses competitive tension to improve price and terms, and gives stakeholders and signatories confidence in the outcome.

AUDIT

Define present energy use and cost, and forecast future requirements

PLAN

Refine the target outcome, including cost, contract term, renewable outcome, use of on-site solar and risk

PROCURE

Manage multi-round competitive procurement process

N

RECOMMEND

Apply rigorous financial and risk analysis, and support stakeholder decision making through to agreement

IMPLEMENT

Manage implementation of the agreement through to a correct first bill

Experience

Standard and renewable electricity and gas agreements for single sites, portfolios and buying groups

1Circle has helped organisations achieve a wide range of objectives through their procurement of electricity and gas.

Our client experience ranges from individual sites to large portfolios of single and multiple entities (group buying) across multiple states and territories.

Mawsons Quarries | Renewable portfolio

As part of an ongoing relationship, 1Circle executed a transition of Mawson's major quarries across Victoria and NSW to 100% renewable power in support of their strategy and focus on leading the materials sector.

National Electronics | 100% Renewable

1Circle achieved a highly competitive 100% renewable electricity supply for this organisation.  This outcome was similar to their previous standard power cost and ensured the Greenstar rating for their facility was achieved.

Brisbane Catholic Archdiocese including Brisbane Catholic Education | 100% Renewable

Initially 1Circle consolidated all of the school portfolio into a single arrangement that delivered significant financial and administrative savings.  Subsequently, the electricity supply was extended for the Archdiocese and transitioned to 100% renewable for large and small sites.

Camberwell Grammar | Renewable PPA

1Circle with its' school partner, GPS, delivered a medium-term retail Power Purchase Agreement for 100% renewable electricity.  This extended the schools' credentials from having the largest school solar system in Australia (1GWh generation) to have a highly competitive renewable grid agreement for the remainder of their electricity needs

Extension pathway

Extend the value of your energy supply agreement

A competitive supply contract is often the first step. Where the business case supports it, clients extend its value through:

  • Bill validation and reporting – ongoing bill checks, and budget and emissions reporting through the contract term
  • Group power – combining demand with like-minded organisations for greater buying power and lower transaction costs
  • Solar performance – with solar exports now earning little or nothing, planning system size and supply contract together to maximise the return from both
  • Embedded networks – aligning supply contracts with on-selling to tenants to improve cost recovery and yield
  • Net-zero energy plan – sequencing renewable supply with efficiency upgrades and on-site solar to meet emissions targets cost-effectively
