SGH reduces cost and improves control on energy

.Spotlight Group Holdings (SGH) is a leading Australian retail group with an extensive national footprint, operating 400 sites across all States and Territories.  Its complex structure spans multiple brands, entities and energy supplied using numerous energy retailers.

To reduce energy costs and enhance operational control, SGH sought a comprehensive solution that would deliver:

  • Enhanced energy performance through advanced analytics, monitoring and reporting
  • Leading tariffs achieved via competitive procurement strategies
  • Reduced metering costs through improved Direct Metering Agreement terms
  • Robust commercial governance from rigorous bill validation and management
  • Systematic tracking of energy improvement opportunities
  • Streamlined compliance reporting for National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER)

To meet these objectives, SGH implemented 1Circle’s Portfolio Energy Management service, enabling strategic oversight and cost-effective energy operations across its diverse portfolio.

Challenge

Spotlight is a large and complex.  This presents multiple challenges to overcome including:

  • Establishing benchmark cost and operational efficiency across given  different network, retail and State tariffs, climate zones and operating profiles
  • High quantity of data sources given  400+ sites using electricity, gas and solar
  • Managing a portfolio that is constantly growing and changing with both central and decentralised administration
  • Co-ordination of energy supply agreements with multiple retailers and (on-market) embedded network sites managed by numerous landlords
  • Coordinating billing and data flows with 10+ energy data providers
  • Managing data quality and avoiding data gaps across diverse systems and multiple utility formats
  • Aligning reporting boundaries across many investment entities under a parent corporate structure

Solution

SGH implemented 1Circle’s Portfolio Energy Management service.  This comprehensive solution included five components

Portfolio Reporting

  • Aggregated electricity, gas, and solar data across all sites
  • Structured data to meet corporate and statutory requirements
  • Evaluated actual vs. budgeted performance for cost and energy use
  • Delivered regulatory submissions, including Clean Energy Regulator emissions reporting

Energy procurement

  • Executed multi-round tenders for large and small market electricity
  • Transitioned small market gas sites to access improved rates

Bill validation and management

  • Verified consumption, tariffs and billing accuracy
  • Centralised bill collation, naming, organisation and storage
  • Provided status tracking and exception management

Metering

  • Conducted a portfolio review to establish scope
  • Ran a multi-round competitive procurement for Direct Metering Agreements
  • Managed the transition and optimised meteirng contracts

Energy performance management

  • Prepared individual and detailed energy consumption analysis by store
  • Identified, quantified, and priortised for action the reduction of excess energy use
  • Calculated and tracked realisation of improvement benefits

Results

Over and above one-off and recurring cost reductions, benefits include:

  • Enhanced Data Visibility and Transparency
Portfolio-wide Power BI dashboards provide clear, real-time visibility of energy usage, costs, and emissions, empowering SGH to make informed and proactive energy management decisions.
  • Improved Data Accuracy and Integrity
Comprehensive verification of electricity, gas, and solar data across multiple providers ensures high data reliability and consistency for reporting and compliance.
  • Streamlined Reporting and Efficiency
Centralised systems and automated dashboards simplify data handling, reduce manual effort, and accelerate energy and emissions reporting processes.
  • Centralised Bill Management
A secure, well-organised bill repository with standardised file naming improves document accessibility, audit readiness, and ongoing management efficiency.
  • Enhanced Sustainability Governance
Integrated Scope 1 and 2 emissions tracking strengthen SGH’s sustainability governance and compliance readiness for NGERS and other ESG frameworks.
  • Data Reusability Across Frameworks
The verified dataset enables efficient reuse for the ABS Energy and Water Survey and future reporting requirements, maintaining consistency across frameworks.
